- Curator's comments
- This is a reworked version of a plate originally engraved in the late 16th century by Leonard Gaultier (for an impression of Gaultier's plate see 1911,0516.1). The portrait has been slightly cropped, and the lettered oval has been replaced by a plain oval on a ledge.
The plate was reworked for Dreux du Radier's "L'Europe Illustre", published by Odieuvre in 1755-65; Odieuvre made much use of restrikes and reworked plates; for comment on "L'Europe Illustre" see 2011,7059.34.
This state, without Odieuvre's address which normally features alongside the bottom,, is not described in the IFF.
