The unusual scale and technique suggest that this may have been the beginning of a watercolour, which was never carried further. It probably dates from the mid-1850s, as Virginia Surtees suggests. Rossetti treated the subject in another, and less immediately recognisable, way, with the two figures walking side by side, in a pen and brown wash drawing dated 1848 (S 32, repr. Marillier, opp. p. 17) and a watercolour dated 1855 (S 76). See also 1916,1115.4.
