As an actress Louisa Ruth Herbert called herself Louisa Herbert. Rossetti, who first met her in 1858 and addressed her as "loveliest of your sex and goddess of the P.R.B.", always refers to her as Ruth Herbert. In 1858-9 she was one of his favourite models, and he drew and painted many portraits of her (S 325-336). It was for her that he painted the watercolour 'Writing on the Sand' (1886,0607.14) in 1859, and the drawing of her by Sandys must date from about the same time.
