- Curator's comments
- Arthur Hind identified the building as the Palazzo del Sasso drawn it from the lower slopes of the Rupi del Sassone, near Furbara on the Via Aurelia. The Via Aurelia (Aurelian Way) was a Roman road constructed around the year 241 BC, between Roma and Pisa.
An unfinished drawing in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Roethlisberger 1968, no. 623, p. 243) shows the same buildings seen from the opposite direction. As Jon Whiteley observes the Oxford sheet reveals how finished studies such as the present one are probably executed in stages beginning with a spare, on the spot drawings in pen and chalk. Marcel Roethlisberger published another view of the buildings at Sasso dated 1649 (for details of this see Whiteley's entry). Other drawings from the same trip are in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam and in the Teyler Museum, Haarlem (no.F.I.85 and S.23, Roethlisberger 1968, no.670, p. 260 and no.671, p. 260 respectively).
