Curator's comments
Étienne Moreau-Nélaton: 'Crayons François de la Collection de M.G. Salting', no. 4. The Duchess was the fourth daughter of François I (1523-1574). She married Philibert Emmanuel, Duc de Savoië in 1559. Six earlier portraits of her are in the Musée Condé. A copy by another hand after this portrait is also in the British Museum (see 1859,0514.272). The drawing can be dated precisely to 1559 because Marguerite is shown wearing the mourning dress that she adopted after the death of her brother Henri II in that year. Since she left court soon after his funeral, this portrait must have been made in that brief period.
