Curator's comments
Related to three drawings by Raphael, of c.1505/7, presumably for an unexecuted painting. The drawing likely also provided a model for Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuro xylograph of the same subject, see Bartsch XII.43.22. Further bibliography: Innis H.Shoemaker, 'The Engravings of Marcantonio Raimondi', Spencer Museum of Art, 1981, cat.50. The design was lifted complete by Bernardino Ricca for his altarpiece of the 'Deposition' of 1521 in San Pietro al Po, Cremona (see David Ekserdjian in 'Print Quarterly' VI 1989, pp.43-4).
