- Curator's comments
- The rough immediacy of these sketches suggests that they may have been drawn on the spot. All three studies (a fourth on the right side of the sheet has been cut and is, as a result, too truncated to read) show the interior from slightly different angles. The left-hand one seems to have been taken from a viewpoint just in front of one of the arched openings; the smaller one from the entrance looking towards the high altar; and the right-hand one from just outside one of the lateral rectangular recesses. The interior is shown from a similar angle to the last one, but from behind the screen of columns in the 'Vedute di Roma' and in 'Le Antichità Romane' (J. Wilton-Ely, 'Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the complete etchings', San Francisco, 1994, I, nos. 219 and 307). A later chalk drawing of the interior of the Pantheon is on the verso of 1908,0616.45.
