- Curator's comments
- Croft-Murray dated this to c.1745-8, but it may well from the following decade as it is much looser in handling than works securely datable to the late 1740s. The imagery of arches and flights of stairs leading the eye upwards is like that of the 'Carceri', the first edition of which was issued in 1749/50 and the much reworked second edition in 1761.
