- Curator's comments
- Piranesi made a number of fanciful drawings of forums in the 1740s, such as 1908,0616.10 in the BM, inspired by prints after stage designs by Filippo Juvarra and the Bibiena family. In the present instance the composition owes more than a passing resemblance to some of the Antique-style Forums contained in Giuseppe Bibiena's 'Architetture e Prospettive', 1740. Croft-Murray tentatively suggested a date of around 1750, it might well be a little earlier. A drawing in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (1915-645) is similar in style and in the employment of roughly drawn framing lines around the composition.
