- Curator's comments
- Thomas compared the composition of this drawing with pl. X, 'Campidoglio antico' of the 'Prima Parte', a series of prints first issued in 1743 (J. Wilton-Ely, 'Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the complete etchings', San Francisco, 1994, I, no. 10). Piranesi made a number of drawings of similarly imaginary forums, the architecture a mix of classical and Baroque forms, in the period 1745-50. Thomas dated the present one to c.1747-8. Piranesi's inspiration for such drawings were prints after theatrical designs by Filippo Juvarra and the Bibiena family - somewhat similar, albeit less complex, compositions are, for example, found in Giuseppe Bibiena's 'Architetture e Prospettive', 1740.
