A man in an old, unbuttoned regimental jacket stands at the handle of a winching apparatus above a pit in the ground, he smokes a pipe; at the edge of the pit stands a boy, detaching a large bucket of rocks from a hook attached to the winch; the head of a ladder is visible rising out of the pit; finished state with outline etching and aquatint and hand-colouring. 1813
