- Curator's comments
- These sheets now bound in a separate album, were originally interleaved between the watercolour drawings by John White (registered as 1906-5-9-1). The original volume containing the John White watercolours was saturated with water after a fire broke out, while awaiting sale at Sotheby's in 1865. The volume was dismantled after it was sold to Henry Stevens, and the original drawings and offsets were bound separately. The offsets have remained together in the present album but the John White watercolours have all been mounted separately. See Paul Hulton and D B Quinn for the descriptions of the individual sheets and pp.28-9 for an older account of the history of the offsets.
More recently the original drawings and offsets were the subject of an exhibition at the British Museum which then toured the US. The publication that accompanied the exhibition has a detailed account of the history of the drawings and volumes and an analysis of the offsets and comparison of many of them with the original watercolours: Kim Sloan, 'A New World: England's First View of America' (London, BM Publications, 2006). The main discussion from that catalogue has been transcribed in the main entry on the series of watercolours, in the curatorial comment for 1906,0509.1.1, the title page inscription to the album.
