- Curator's comments
- After a drawing formerly in the Arundel, Zanetti, Denon, Lawrence, Heseltine and Oppenheimer collections.
The original of this copy is presumably the drawing formerly in the Arundel, Zanetti, Denon (lithograph in reverse in 'Monuments', Weigel 5465), Lawrence, Heseltine and Oppenheimer Collections. It was lot 130A in the last-named's sale (Christie's, 1936, 10 July) when it was described as being in pen and brush and bistre, heightened with bodycolour, on grey paper. A version, which seems to have been in the same technique, was formerly in the Pembroke Collection (Strong, Wilton, i. 7, as Meldolla).
An old inscription on the mount of the Oppenheimer drawing claimed that the composition was etched by Hendrik van der Borcht. I have never seen an impression of this print.
