Mrs. Fröhlich-Bum was the first to point out that this is a study for the figure of St. Jerome in the background of the 'Madonna dal Collo Lungo' in the Uffizi. The painting was commissioned from Parmigianino by Elena Bajardi, widow of Francesco Tagliaferri, on 23 December 1534, and in 1542, after the artist's death, it was placed unfinished above the altar of the chapel in S. Maria dei Servi, Parma, for which it had been ordered. For other studies for the St. Jerome (some of them with St. Francis, who does not appear in the picture) see Freedberg (loc. cit.), Popham, (loc. cit.). and Pp,2.138, Pp,2.141; Pp,2.142 and Pp,2.144.
