Acquired as by Annibale Carracci. Etched in reverse as Annibale when the drawing was in Reveley's collection in C.M. Metz, 'Imitations of Ancient and Modern Drawings', London, 1789 (and in 1798 edition). Henry Reveley's name etched on the plate as then owner of this drawing. An impression of the print is 1905,1110.6. The drawing was placed as Anonymous XVIIc Italian by Nicholas Turner in 1991.
A drawing of a group of hermits, very probably by the same hand, was offered at Dorotheum, Vienna, 6 November 2019, lot 98. That drawing was described as Neapolitan, and bore an old (and evidently mistaken) attribution to Salvator Rosa. For further information on the Dorotheum sheet, see a print-out in the dossier.
