- Curator's comments
- The group occurs in a painting in Brera, attributed to Pomponio Allegri, but the motif may well be derived from Parmigianino.
Popham 1967
The group occurs in a painting in the Brera attributed by Corrado Ricci to Pomponio Allegri ('Bollettino d'arte', 2nd series, x (1930-1), p. 351, fig. 16). Even if that attribution is correct, and in spite of Quintavalle's comment on 1905,1110.49, "accentuato e pedissequo correggismo non conforme al Parmigianino", I believe that the motif may well be derived from Parmigianino. A similar motif occurs in a drawing certainly by him in the Pierpont Morgan Library (iv. 40). Another, later, copy of the group is catalogued below (Ff,4.21).
Literature: Quintavalle, p. 206.
