- Curator's comments
- There is another early drawing by the artist with four studies in red chalk of an eagle drawn from life (Gnann no. 100), which was unknown to Popham as it only came to light in an auction in 1988.
Lit.: A.E. Popham, 'Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino', Cambridge, 1971, no. 167, pl. 79; A. Gnann, 'Parmigianino, Die Zeichnung', Petersberg, 2007, p. 20, no. 99
Drawings of this character are difficult to date, but the style seems to indicate an early period. The eagle is the attribute of St. John the Evangelist and this drawing may be connected with the representation of the Saint on which Parmigianino was engaged in the period before he left Parma in 1524, (see 1874,0808.2267).
