- Curator's comments
- Achim Gnann suggests this may follow on from a Parmigianino red chalk drawing in the Louvre of the Virgin suckling the Christ Child (Popham no. 499, pl. 65; Gnann no. 19).

Though the motif of a child at the breast looking round at the spectator is one which occurs in Leonardo's 'Madonna Litta' and in a composition of the 'Holy Family' known from the engraving B. xiv, p. 67, 60, which has been convincingly attributed to Andrea del Sarto by John Shearman ('Andrea del Sarto', Oxford, 1965, p. 288), the present drawing may be an independent study from the life. Its style suggests a date in Parmigianino's pre-Roman period.
