- The child is a copy of the dead child in the centre of Marcantonio's engraving of the 'Massacre of the Innocents' after Raphael (B.XIV, p.19, 18-20), which was the starting point for Parmigianino's etching of a sleeping cupid (B.XVI.13.11; three impressions in the BM including rare first state, 1855,0214.78). Achim Gnann compares the helmet on the verso to those in Caraglio's 'Martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul' engraving after Parmigianino (Bartsch XV,71,8; BM impression W,1.184).

The child is a copy of the dead child in the centre of Marcantonio's engraving of the 'Massacre of the Innocents' after Raphael (B. xiv, p. 19, 18-20). The drawing was no doubt made in connexion with Parmigianino's etching of a sleeping Cupid (B. xvi, p. 13, 11). No. in, which may date from about 1527, is possibly an alternative version of the Cupid in the etching.
