- Curator's comments
- The drawing is one of a group of family scenes with mothers and children set in domestic interiors in which Schenau specialised. A pen and ink drawing with brown wash without the small dog and toy horse on the left appears to be a preliminary study for this sheet (Dresden, Kupferstich-Kabinett, inv. 1874-16) and the group of figures was also used in a piece of Meissen porcelain; for details see Anke Fröhlich-Schauseil, 'Schenau (1737-1806): Monographie und Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde, Handzeichnungen und Druckgraphik von Johann Eleazar Zeissig, gen.
