One of the most outstanding, yet little-known, woodcuts produced during the Renaissance, this print commemorates the genealogy of the House of the Hapsburgs. The tree comprises twenty sheets that were meant to be joined together and hung from a height, or rolled up and spread on a flat surface. The tree begins with King Pharamundo and ends with Emperor Charles V. Editions in French (1535), Latin (1540) and Spanish (1540) are known. The impression shown here is from the 1540 edition. Little is known about Peril except that he worked in Antwerp, and around 1530 Margaret of Austria commissioned him to produce a similar frieze depicting the procession through Bologna following the coronation of Charles V as emperor.

Another impression of this print has recently been purchased by the Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam (2010).
