- Curator's comments
- This title-page woodcut was used in five of Pirckheimer's publications, the first time in Willibald Pirckheimer's tanslation of Plutarch, entitled 'Plutarchi Chaeronei de his qui tarde a numine corripiuntur libellus', printed by F Peypus in Nuremberg, 1513.
CD, who first considered this to be School of Nuremberg and inclined to attribute the woodcut to Springinklee (see CD.I.379.1), retracted his doubts about Dürer's authorship later in Kurth (1927), no.270, introduction.
This woodcut is cropped at the bottom edge.
