- Curator's comments
- For the change of attribution of these works from Ramberg to Burney and related literature, see the entry on the first in this group of three watercolours (1904,0101.1).
The large painting by Benjamin West in the centre is flanked by two other works by him: 'The Call of the Prophet Jeremiah' on the right (no. 135) and 'The Call of the Prophet Isiah' on the left (no. 121) - all three works were intended for the chapel at Windsor. Reynolds's portrait of Charles Fox is visible in the upper left (no. 108) and on the lower right is John Webber's 'A party from His Majesty's ship Resolution on Captain Cook's last voyage shooting sea horses [walruses], Latititude 71 North, in the year 1778' (no. 140, now National Maritime Museum, Greenwich). The bottom right corner also contains two pictures by Loutherbourg: a small scene of an inn (no. 126) directly underneath the bottom-right corner of West's centrepiece, now at the Huntington Library, San Marino, and a view of Matlock (no. 133), which has since disappeared.
