- The occasion for this photograph was a gathering in 1894 of the extended royal family for the wedding at Coburg of two of Queen Victoria’s grand-children, Grand Duke Ernest Louis of Hesse, and the Rhine aged 25, only surviving son of Princess Alice, to Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, aged 17, daughter of Prince Alfred. It was one of the largest gatherings of the nineteenth century, covering four generations and many European royalties. The fourth generation is represented by the Queen’s first great-granddaughter, Princess Feodora of Saxe-Meiningen, seated in the first row at the feet of her grand-mother, Empress Frederick. Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany is on the left in the second row. The Queen arrived in Coburg on 17 April to a ceremonial welcome from a squadron of the Prussian regiment of Dragoons, gaily decorated houses and two triumphal arches, from one of which with girls in white threw down flowers. The wedding took place on 19 April. On 20 April, two members of the family, Tsarevich Nicholas, heir to the Imperial Russian throne and Princess Alix of Hesse, the bridegroom’s youngest sister, became engaged. The photograph was taken to celebrate the engagement, with Nicholas and Alix on the left in the third row. The bridal couple are not present having departed after the wedding
