- Information from Linda Whiteley (personal communication, August 2009): The painting (present whereabouts unknown, but a version appeared in a sale at Christie's, Glasgow, 12 June 1996) was exhibited at the Salon in 1827 (No. 306) under the title "Miss MacDonald"; the play "Edouard en Ecosse, ou, la nuit d'un proscrit" by Alexander Duval, 1802, told the story of the Young Pretender's escape after the Jacobite Rebellion aided by Flora MacDonald.
The scene is set in South Uist in June 1746. On hearing of the arrival of a Royal Navy detachment Prince Charles Edward hid with his companions in a cave, but his meeting with Flora MacDonald actually took place some time later in a herdsman's hut where he persuaded her to let him accompany her by boat to Skye in disguise as her maid.
