- Text from 'Gainsborough and Reynolds in the BM', BM 1984 cat.132:
The daughter of Viscount Galway, who married the Earl of Cork in 1786. Fanny Burney wrote in 1782: "Miss M. is between thirty and forty, very short, very fat, but handsome; splendidly and fantastically dressed; rouged not unbecomingly, yet evidently and palpably desirous of gaining notice and admiration". (Leslie and Taylor, II, p. 278). She died in 1840, aged nearly a hundred, having been well known in society for her eccentricities. The painting is now in the National Gallery.
