- It is suggested by Chaloner Smith that the portrait is not of Polly Kennedy, who used the alias Jones, and this is supported by a manuscript note in the departmental copy of Whitman. Chaloner Smith suggests that the portrait may in fact be of Miss Hunter (Mrs Clarke), the two names having been confused.
It is also possible that there is another Miss Jones who has been confused with Miss Kennedy: a note on another impression (1902,1011.2318), following on from an earlier ink identification 'Miss Polly Jones', reads 'who had a trial with Mr Dillon and lived with Mr Eden'.
