- Curator's comments
- The identity of the sitter has not been established: according to Chaloner Smith, the lady who died in 1767, which is the date Bromley gives for the person he suggests, would have been described as the Honble Mrs Anne Granville (daughter of Lord Lansdowne), and her cousin Mary, afterwards Mrs Delany, first changed her name in 1718. He adds that there is no record of a Mary Anne in that family.
