- Richard Caton Woodville was commissioned to paint the panoramic group portrait of the marriage on 23 July, 1885. A military painter, he had never attempted anything similar. At this same date Queen Victoria commissioned a portrait from Carl Sohn of Prince Henry in his Prussian uniform, which she gave to Princess Beatrice shortly before the marriage (Millar, cat. 644).
