The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London in 1865 (No.52) and was painted for the Queen. The painting is in the Royal Collection, with a long and detailed catalogue entry outlining the commission and its lengthy execution, 1863-5 (Millar, cat. 239, RCIN 404545). See also: Jeremy Maas, The Prince of Wales’s Wedding: The Story of a Picture, London, 1977, with particular emphasis on the use of photography for the many sitters making up the vast group.
