- Based on the inscription, this drawing was initially catalogued as a portrait of Francis Cholmeley. Kitson, however, identified the sitter as Sir Henry Englefield, Francis Cholmeley's uncle, by making a comparison with another portrait in the collection of Mr. Fairfax-Cholmeley (S.D. Kitson, ‘The Life of John Sell Cotman’, 1937, p. 63 (fn) & pl.23). This second portrait (dated 6th July 1804) is reproduced as plate 16 in David Hill, ‘Cotman in the North’, 2005, p. 19. We are grateful to Henry Lowe for pointing out the correct identification (see dossier).
