Portrait of the Marquis de Sade, half-length, turned slightly to right, head directed and looking three-quarters to left, wearing dark coat, white shirt with wide collar and loose necktie, dark hair in loose curls; surrounded by four full-length figures of winged and horned demons from whose mouths issue jets directed at the Marquis, one behind him holding up snakes which also aim jets, one at left pouring something froma small jug into a small container, one standing behind at right holding up a large framed painting or mirror, the last grasping his shoulder; in the foreground, a satyr embracing an unwilling mermaid; apparently an illustration to an unascertained publication.
