- The sculpture, now in the Vatican in Rome is now considered to belong either to a copy or an adaption of a lost prototype of the third or second century B.C. In his list of contents and locations, De Bisschop calls the torso 'Truncus Herculis', cites the signature in Greek characters, gives a Dutch translation and states that Michelangelo considered it to be the 'opus absolutissmum'. De Bisschop reproduces the torso three times, without its inscription, in reverse. Plate 24 (1901,1022.2531.25) gives a three-quarter back view after a drawing by Doncker, plate 25 (1901,1022.2531.26) two three-quarter front views from about the same angle after drawings by Doncker and Doudijns. Neither these nor any intermediary drawings by De Bisschop have come to light. The image was rotated 90º to right to fit page.
