- Curator's comments
- The wood-engraving is in reverse to this study, and was published 1864, in the Dalziel Brothers 'The Parables of Our Lord', designed by Millais (for an album of proof impressions see 1907,0515.62-81). Reproduced in J G Millais' 'Life', Vol I, p 405. The final design differed considerably from this sketch. For another, see 1901,0516.12, acquired with this drawing. For a finished drawing for this same publication see 1900,0411.6.

- Acquisition notes
- The drawing was purchased by the British Museum when it was shown in an exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1901; some of the works were lent, others were for sale. The introductory essay states that the drawings were preserved by the late Lady Millais who 'rescued them from her husband's studio' and placed them in books, carefully titled and dated. The essay was written by J. G. Millais, presumably the consignor of the works to the exhibition/sale and therefore the previous owner. The Museum purchased 1901,0516.8 to 15, for which they paid £157.10.0 total.
