- Curator's comments
- As observed by Bober (1957, p. 75), this drawing is reminiscent of Michelangelo's early Pietà and develops Aspertini's own earlier painting in the Cappella Garganelli of San Petronio in Bologna (Faietti-Scaglietti 1995, cat. dip. 36, pp. 169-72). Brugnoli (1983, p. 85) sees a parallel between the standing figure on the right-hand sheet and the figure of St. Peter by Sebastiano del Piombo in the Cappella Borgherini in San Pietro in Montorio (Rome). See also Brugnoli 1983, p. 85 for parallels between this sheet and f. 1898,1123.3.1 (left-hand page) and works by Raphael and Sebastiano del Piombo (parallels drawn also for London II, 1862,0712.396v; 1862,0712.429v; 1862,0712.430v [Bober ff. 3, 36v, 37v].
