- Curator's comments
- Chevremont ('Marat, Index du bibliophile', Paris, 1876, p.365-366) indicates that the original relief (then in the collection of Chéron de Villiers) was mistakingly believed to be the portrait of the dead Marat executed by Bonvalet and presented to the National Convention on 25 July 1793. However, notes Chevremont, this is hardly the portrait of a dead man, least of all Marat.
