Curator's comments
Derives from a portrait of Marat which was frequently reproduced; the original design is attributed to Desrais in the IFF (Bonneville, cat. No.93; also see De Vinck cat. No. 5266) although other plates name Bonneville as the designer (see 1901,1022.579 and 1898,0527.48). Chevremont refers to the design as by Bonneville.
