Exhibition label 1992:
'Both George III and Queen Charlotte were keen botanists and were so impressed by Mrs Delany's collection, which they had requested to see when they first met her at the Duchess of Portland's home, Bulstrode, in 1776, that they instructed Joseph Banks to send specimens of any new foreign plants arriving at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to her to copy. After the Duchess of Portland's death in 1785, the King and Queen invited her to live in a 'grace and favour' house at Windsor and from this time until her death in 1788, Mrs Delany was on terms of close and informal friendship with them'.
