- For another engraving from the same drawing by Gilbert published in 1888, see 1902,1011.10663..
Gilbert based his wood-engraving on a portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, showing the 18-month old Princess seated with flowers in her lap and in her left hand (Millar, cat. 862, RCIN 403056). The painting was reproduced in 1842 in a lithograph by Léon Noël, and this may have been Gilbert’s source. The wood-engraving appeared in the Illustrated London News for the first time in 1842, see: 1902,1011.10686.c
