- Curator's comments
- De Bisschop's prototype may have been a drawing attributed to Carracci, last recorded in the Rutgers collection (sale, Amsterdam, 1 December 1778, lot A56, to Vinkeles, see de Bisschop, ed. Van Gelder and Jost, 1985, I, p. 231, under no. 2). A weaker version of the British Museum drawing is in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle (inv.no. 5712; Blunt and Cooke, 1960, p. 123, no. 1068 (as anonymous)), and is identical in practically every respect, except for the position of the head.
This is one from a series of 25 etchings 'Paradigmata Graphices variorum artificum'; first published in The Hague in 1671.For more information about this edition and other present volumes in the British Museum see comments of 1850,0810.652-810
