- Curator's comments
- There can be little doubt that this etching is a reduced copy in reverse of a drawing in the Louvre, Cabinet des Dessins (inv. no. 2969), from the Lempereur collection. It is thought the drawing may be related to a fresco in Palazzo dei Conservatori in Rome known as 'Battle of Tullus Hostilius against the Armies of Veii and Fidenae'. A copy of the etching in reverse is also known in the Leiden Printroom (inv. no. 893, S 89).
This etching is one from a series of 25 etchings 'Paradigmata Graphices variorum artificum'; first published in The Hague in 1671. For more information about this edition and other present volumes of 'Paradigmata Graphices Variorum Artificum' in the British Museum see comments of 1850,0810.652-810
