- Curator's comments
- One of the four packs of cards designed by Jean Desmarests de Saint-Sorlin on the orders of Cardinal Mazarin as an educational game for the young Louis XIV. For the complete set see curator's comment to 1871,0513.441 and for the individual cards see separate entries for De Vesme/Massar numbers from 648 to 687. The cards in this incomplete unmounted set are: De Vesme/Massar 649-650, 657-659, 666-668, 675-677 and 684-687. Unlike the original pack in which several cards were printed on the same plate, each of these copies is printed on a separate plate. Each card depicts one or more kings with accompanying descriptive text and indication of number and suit. The cards, all in the third state, are Pharamond, Merouée, Clovis, Charles Martel, Charlemagne, Robert, Philippe Auguste, Saint Louis, Charles huit, Henry le grand, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, "ni bons ni mauvais", "fayneants" and "sans foy".
