- Curator's comments
- The original painting was previously identified as Henry Purcell, and has since been thought to be of Daniel. The painting is in the National Portrait Gallery, currently identified as 'Unknown man, formerly known as Daniel Purcell'. For this see NPG 1463. For details of the argument originally identifying the sitter as Daniel Purcell see C J Holmes, 'The Portraits of Arne and Purcell' in 'The Burlington Magazine', vol. XXVII (1915), pp.182-88.
