'This was made by Dürer in connection with the engraving the ‘Virgin with sceptre and crown of stars’ (Meder no. 37 ) dated 1516, even though the sketch is not closely followed in the print. Dodgson naturally associated it with other studies done at that stage of Dürer's career of the ‘Virgin on the crescent moon’, both in the Louvre, Paris (Winkler, ‘Dürer’, iii, pls. 545, 547), some of which have more affinity with the engraving the ‘Virgin and Child on the crescent moon’ (Meder no.35) of 1514. Dodgson and the Tietzes thought it conceivable that the drawing might be earlier in date, circa1512, and in the circumstances it seems prudent not to attempt too precise a dating but merely to place it within the period c. 1512-16'
