- Ternois likens the subject to the figures dining in Callot's 'Little Trellis' etching (Lieure 1428; Meaume 710), the last print executed (and perhaps left unfinished) on his death in 1635. There is, however, little similarity between the two and the present drawing is perhaps earlier, the attenuated mannerist figures and the exaggerated chiaroscuro lighting have more in common with studies such as the 'soldier with a shield' in the Hermitage of c. 1617 (Ternois 69; illustrated in colour as no. 478 in the 1992 catalogue).
