- Panofsky suggested that this drawing was copied after a figure in a painting by Vittore Carpaccio or Gentile Bellini that Dürer would have seen in Venice, but its rapid execution indicates that it is more likely to be a sketch from life. The emphatic positioning of the large monogram and date suggest that Dürer added them when he presented the drawing to an admirer. The inscription in ink suggests an early Italian provenance for the drawing.
