Curator's comments
The present sheet is perhaps a trial for the larger, more finished sheet of a similar composition with a central motif of a clump of trees in the Louvre (for which see inv. no. RF 765, Roethlisberger 1968, no. 634, p. 247). It is possible that the present drawing was drawn outside, as the pen lines have the appearance of having been done at speed. It displays all of the characteristics of pen that are typical of Claude’s work from the late 1640s such as the feathery, short strokes. Lit.: A.M. Hind, 'Catalogue of the Drawings of Claude Lorrain preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings', London, 1926, no. 75, p. 7; M. Roethlisberger, 'Claude Lorrain: The drawings catalog', 2 vols, Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1968, no. 633, p. 247; C. van Tuyll & M. Plomp, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, ‘Claude Gellée, dit le Lorrain. Le dessinateur face à la nature’, 2011–12, p. 212, fig. 38
