- Curator's comments
- Probably a preparatory study for the 'Martyrdom of St Bartholomew' (1635-6) painted for S. Martino, Siena. The original painting is badly damaged. 1989,0617.278 is a certain study for this painting, see Turner and Plazzotta, cat. no. 110.

Turner and Plazzotta 1991
Although Robinson considered this to be a study for a St Jerome, there are good reasons for supposing that the figure was intended as a St Bartholomew for the altarpiece discussed under Turner and Plazzotta 1991, cat. no. 110. The pose of the figure in 1895,0915.703 most closely resembles that of St Bartholomew in two of the composition drawings for this altarpiece, Turner and Plazzotta 1991, cat. nos. 110 and 111, as well as in two other figure studies for the saint, one in red chalk in the Steiner collection, Larchmont, New York (Oberhuber, 1977, no. 18, where it is identified as perhaps for a 'Raising of Lazarus'), and the other in pen and brown wash formerly in a private collection, Dorset (sale, Sotheby's, London, 17 April 1980, lot 146, repr.). In all five drawings the saint is represented with a squarish beard, his head tilted back and his arms outstretched; a cloth is wrapped about his loins; and his torso is illuminated in much the same way, though not always from the same direction.
