Gere & Pouncey 1983
Attributed to Federico Zuccaro by Robinson, without reference to the fact of its being a copy of the r.-hand wing of the altarpiece by Andrea del Sarto, dated 1528, painted for the Chiesa del Romitorio, also known as the Paradisino, at Vallombrosa, and now in the Uffizi (J. Shearman, 'Andrea del Sarto', Oxford, 1965, no. 86). The evidence of inscriptions on drawings shows that Federico spent some time at Vallombrosa in August of 1576 and of 1577 (see D. Heikamp, 'Paragone', 205 (1967), pp. 59f.). Heikamp was the first to point out that the copy of the whole altarpiece in its original state in the Albertina (143; S.R. 181; repr. Heikamp, pl. 30b), inscribed "Andrea del Sarto, a valle ombrosa 2 agosto" is by Federico. According to him, a copy of the pair of saints on the l.-hand side, also by Federico, is in the Art Museum at Worcester, Mass. Copies of both pairs, also apparently by Federico, are in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (80.3.110 and 111).
