- Curator's comments
- This fine half-length bust of a female saint was attributed to Timoteo Viti by Morelli and Van Marle, although a surely correct consensus in favour of Raphael's authorship has since developed. The sheet is normally dated to the latter's Umbrian period: Fischel associated its technique with a drawing in the Ashmolean Museum (K.T. Parker, 'Catalogue of the Collection of Drawings in the Ashmolean Museum', vol. II, Italian Schools, Oxford, 1956, no. 515; Joannides, no. 9) which he dated to c. 1498. Pouncey and Gere agreed with the connection to the Oxford 'Head of a Youth', but they, following Parker, date that work to c. 1504 near the 'Marriage of the Virgin' (Brera, Milan; L. Dussler, 'Raphael: a Critical Catalogue', London, 1971, pp. 10-11, pl. 32; J. Meyer zur Capellen, 'Raphael: The Paintings. Vol. I, The Beginning in Umbria and Florence, ca. 1500-08', Landshut, 2001, no. 9, pp. 138-41). Like the 'Head of a Man' (inv. 1895-9-15-619), this sheet was first drawn in black chalk over extensive underdrawing in stylus. The drawing has not been connected to a painting, but may have been made, but never used, as a cartoon for a small devotional picture like Perugino's single, half-length figures of saints (see, for example, his 'Mary Magdalene', Florence, Palazzo Pitti, Galleria Palatina, no. 42, in P. Scarpellini, 'Perugino', Milan, 1984, no. 107, pp. 101-2, fig. 191).
